Zao Onsen & Zao Mountain

After lunch we took another bus to the top of Mt. Zao (an hour ride each way)

From the bus stop at the top of the mountain we took the chair lift to the top. (700 yen each for a round trip chair lift ride)

Yoshiko and Tsukiko are happy to be riding up rather than hiking by foot. Also, we didn't have time to walk since we had just an hour before the next bus down the mountain.

Even after we got to the top we had to hike a bit to see the crater and lake Okama. People can be seen on the trail way ahead of us.

Here is the crater lake. It is called Okama because the shape resembles a rice cooking bowl.

Tsukiko is standing by the sign at the top of the mountain. The sign reads: karita dake sancho. This means: this is the top of the mountain

Another view of Okama

At the top of Mt. Zao is a shrine. (This is Japan)

Here is the shrine building.

It's time to head back down and catch the bus back to town.

You can see a long way from the top of the mountain.
We are now looking forward to getting back to the ryokan, soaking in the hot spring and having a delicious gourmet ryokan/
