Gembikei Gorge

From the train station at Ichinoseki we took the bus to the Gembikei Gorge where we stayed in a small Ryokan just on the edge of the gorge. After a quick noodle lunch we explored the area, taking pictures with the afternoon sun light. The gorge was rather interesting and the colors of the fall foliage was quite beautiful. An interesting activity at the gorge was to order dongo (mochi balls on a stick) and tea from a small restaurant on one side of the gorge and have the food delivered to the customer on the other side of the gorge via a basket which traversed the gorge on a cable.
We stayed in the Ryokan over night, enjoyed the delicious food, and the next morning took another walk, this time taking photos in the morning light.

Further upstream the gorge is not quite so deep

From a bridge avross the gorge we can look upstream

Downstream the gorge spreads out. There is a suspension foot bridge across the gorge here.
As I mentioned, one of the activities at the gorge was to order dongo and tea from across the gorge. Next page shows some photos of this activity.-           pnext.gif
