Gembikei Gorge

Visitors were fascinated with the idea of buying dongos and tea from a restaurant on one side of the gorge and having it delivered in a basket traversing a cable across the gorge to the other side. Customers would use a small wooden mallet to bang on a board connected to the cable when they wanted the shop workers attention for an order. A kind of primitive telephone system,. Here are some photos of the activity.

The restaurant worker is hauling in an empty basket from across the gorge

The basket is filled with dongos and tea for waiting customers across the gorge

He releases the basket for its downward run on a cable to the other side of the gorge

There it goes! Half way across now.

Many people are waiting on the other side for the basket to arrive. It is almost there

Oooh, let's take out the goodies.

The customers enjoy their dongos and tea under this shelter on the edge of the gorge.

We walked arounf the rim of the gorge and took a lot of pictured of the afternoon scenes.-           pnext.gif
