Abe-san's Ebishima Farm House

Tsukiko arranged for us to stay in an old farm house near Tsuruoka near the Japan sea. Abe-san purchased the old farm house and, while keeping the old basic structure and framing, renovated it with modern materials and made it a bit more habitable. The visit to the farmhouse was a focal point and hilight of our trip in Tohoku prefecture. A special bonus we looked forward to was having some of Abe-san's hand made soba noodles. On these pages (five in all) are pictures of our evening and dinner with Abe-san.

Here we are in the main room of Abe-san's farm house. Mrs Abe is in the red sweater, Kimura-san is standing just behind her, and behind him is Abe-san. Tsukiko and Yoshiko are on the right of the fire pit.

When we arrived there were already fish roasting around the charcoal fire

This is Kimura-san's friend, Naomi, preparing a fruit dish, and Abe-san's friend, Kazuo-san, turning the fish.

Kimura-san is sitting by the fire. Heat to the farm house was by this fire and a wood burning stove located nearby. No central heating. Abe-san made the charcoal himself in a hillside kiln.

A pot has been added over the fire to cook some daikon. We had cooked daikon (the large Japanese radish) with some of Abe-san's home made miso. Abe-san and Kazuo-san enjoy making miso together.

Mrs. Abe is sitting in a chair near the wood burning stove while watches the fish cooking by the fire.

While we were all realxing around the fire, Abe-san was busy Making soba.-           pnext.gif
