Japan 2001
Narai

One of the buildings was preseerved as a museum and open to the public so that we could see a typical interior and how a family from the edo period would live.

The three sisters are standing at the entrance of the old house. Note the shortness of the front door.

Inside the central room has the typical fire pit which served as the cooking area next to the kitchen and provided the heating for the house.. The tatami mats are quite old and do not have the wrapped edge that modern mats have.

Old style pillows and arm rests

In the back yard there is a bath house (the small white building) and behind that a storage house with thick, fireproof walls.

In the loft (second floor) there was a loom and spinning wheel amongst other items.

From the loft we could look down on the main living room.

Another intereting site in Narai was the old arched Bridge -           pnext.gif
