China Ink Paintings by Yoju

sumi-e

Since I was a small child I have studied the technique of using China ink and brush. And I have studied the great masters of China and Japan. The paintings shown here are not in the classical tradition, but are made using the classical materials and techniques. I hope you enjoy my renditions using China ink.

Ink and wash painting is an East Asian type of brush painting. It is also known as wash painting, by its Chinese name mo-shui or by its Japanese names, suibokuga or sumi-e. Only black ink — the same as used in East Asian calligraphy — is used, in various concentrations.
